Searching

  1. How do I search by products/services ?
    - enter the keyword(s)
    - make the selection in the geographical drop down list under "Region"
    - click on "Search"
    - to obtain the product/service list: click on the product/service, or if you are a paying user select the products/services that interest you and click on "View marked"
    - you will obtain the list of companies that match your criteria
    - click on the company that interests you, or if you are a paying user select companies and click on "View marked"

    The search is made in the Kompass classification system (over 54,000 product/service entries) which covers all industrial and economic sectors.

    --> What type of keywords can I enter ?
    Enter the name of the product/service, not the type of company.
    For example:
    Not correct - “producer of plastic”
    Correct - “plastic cups”

    --> Should I search using UK or US spellings (e.g. colour/color) and vocabulary (nappies/diapers)?
    You may use either since we have a comprehensive thesaurus of alternative spellings and synonyms.

    --> What languages can I search in?
    kompass.com is now available in 25 languages (user interface and classification entirely translated). These languages are listed at the bottom of the homepage. We plan to add more languages in the future.

    --> What happens when a search with one keyword produces no results?
    An extended search in the nature of business descriptions of the company profiles is automatically conducted. A search with several keywords is first conducted with "and" between the keywords and then if there are still no results, an extended search is conducted.

    - to obtain the company profiles: click on the company name, or if you are a paying user select certain companies and click on "View marked"

    Note: You may enter your keywords or company/trade names followed by the star icon (for example "photo*"). You will get all the products/ services or company/trade names beginning with "photo". This is helpful when you are unsure about the spelling or wording.

  5. Can I search with other (non Kompass) classification systems?
    Yes, you may search with the following systems: SIC, NAICS, NACE, and CPV Just do the following:
    - click on "More search criteria” on the homepage
    - enter the code(s) next to "Codes”
    - select the system in the drop down list
  6. How can I browse through the Kompass classification?
    - click on "Guided search” on the homepage (this may be combined with a geographical search)
    - click on one of the industrial groupings
    - click on one of the product groupings
    - you will obtain various product groups
    - click on the product that interests you, or if you are a paying user select products and click on "View marked"
    - click on the company that interests you, or if you are a paying user select companies and click on "View marked"
    - you will obtain the list of companies that match your criteria
    - to obtain the company profiles: click on the company name, or if you are a paying user select certain companies and click on "View marked"
  7. Can I search directly on a company’s website or product catalogue?
    Yes, on certain company profiles there is a keyword search box on the left side.
  8. How do I search geographically ?
    you may select one of the following criteria:
    - worldwide
    - region (e.g. Western Europe)
    - country

    Paying users (subscribers or credit unit buyers) have access to these additional criteria (in the Advanced search) :
    - city
    - zip/postal code
    - regions for certain countries (e.g. West Sussex for the UK)

    On the company list, click on "display your search criteria”. A pop-up will appear with your search criteria which may be printed.

    Yes, there is a feature on kompass.com which allows downloading of mailing addresses. This feature is available only to subscribers and is an additional option.

  1. I'm having problems with kompass.com, whom should I contact ?

    Please contact our customer service desk at webmaster@kompass.com and provide the following information:
    - what are the exact steps you are taking before you encounter the problem?
    - date and time
    - what are the exact error messages you are getting, if any?
    - what is your user name ?
    - what is the name and version of your operating system?
    - what is the name and version of your web browser?
    - have you enabled the cookies on your machine ?
       It is necessary to enable cookies in order to be recognized by the site.
    - have you had problems with other Internet sites or with your Internet Service Provider ?

    A cookie is a small text file and it is limited in size. It has limited privileges on your machine. It can't contain executable files or viruses. The cookie is sent by a web site in order to offer a better navigation on the site.
    You need to accept the cookies from kompass.com so that you can be identified during your session and view the site in the language you selected when entering the site, wherever you surf on kompass.com.     As a free user, you have access to the following:

    - language recognition

    All paying services are clearly marked. Information about paid access is available from your local Kompass publisher or from webmaster@kompass.com.

  2. I have access to kompass.com through an IP address subscription, but I am refused entry ?

    - are you going to www.kompass.com/ip ?
    - are you using the right computer (check if the IP address of your computer is on the list of recognized addresses) ?
    - does your subscription allow for simultaneous users ?

    Provide this information to your local Kompass publisher or webmaster@kompass.com.
  3. I have access to kompass.com through a Referrer subscription, but Im refused entry ?

    Certain Internet access administration tools block the referrer from the user's computer. These tools are firewalls or administration/internet security tools as for example : Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF).

    Here is an information page about these 2 tools (note that there are others on the market, this serves just as an example) :

    In order to access kompass.com via a referrer, it is necessary to configure these tools so that they accept/allow the referrer.
    If you use such an administration tool, you need either to deactivate it or to modify the rules of redirection in order to access kompass.com through your referrer.
  4. I am a paying user of kompass.com, but the site does not recognize me as such?

    Here is a check list:
    - Have you signed out properly at the end of every session by clicking on the "sign-out” button?
    - Have you respected your simultaneous user limit?
    - Have you erased your temporary Internet files (Tools / Internet Options) ?
    - Have you activated your cookies?

Printing

  1. Is it possible to print the company profile ?
    All users may print company profiles from the company profile page (PDF files downloaded and printed with Acrobat Reader). Paying users may also print these profiles directly from the company list. The profiles are printed in a clear and concise format.
  2. What is PDF ?
    PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is modeled after the PostScript language. The PDF files on www.kompass.com can be viewed, navigated and printed from a workstation using Acrobat Reader software from Adobe Systems, Inc. Versions of Acrobat Reader run on DOS, Windows, Macintosh and Unix systems.
  3. I'm having problems viewing the PDF files, what's wrong ?
    You may have problems viewing on screen (e.g. blank screens) if you have recently upgraded Internet Explorer (Version 4 to Version 5) without reinstalling a newer version of Acrobat Reader. Installation of other Adobe products may also affect the Acrobat Reader that is currently installed on your PC (personal computer). (For a possible solution, see below)
    Otherwise this may be due to a pop-up blocker option on your computer (e.g. this exists in the Google toolbar). Just deactivate this option or add kompass.com to your list of approved sites (e.g. in Internet Explorer…see below).
  4. I'm having problems printing the PDF files, what's wrong ?
    Your printer and/or your PC's memory capacity may not be able to deal with a long series of PDF files (e.g. over 15 pages). To avoid these problems, you may try printing one page at a time.

    -->Solution for viewing and printing problems :
    You may still be able to save the PDF file on your PC and view and/or print it from your PC using your current Acrobat Reader software. To do so, right click on the link to the PDF file and save it on your PC. You can then open the Acrobat Reader from your PC and directly view and/or print the PDF file.
  5. How can I limit the data fields printed in the profile ?
    (e.g. I only want contact details and executives) - Click on “print options” on the top right corner of the company result screen (available to paying users only). - A pop-up will appear, click on "Modify” - make the selection under "Field selection” - click on "Save”
    (you can also modify the company selection and file format)

E-mail messages

  1. Can I send a message to several companies at a time ?
    On kompass.com, it is necessary to send one e-mail at a time. The system functions in this way in order to prevent spamming (abusive mass e-mail dispatches). Consequently the companies listed on kompass.com are satisfied and continue listing themselves which ensures that the kompass.com database remains a rich information source for users.

  2. Can I attach files or documents to my e-mail message ?
    No, it is not possible to attach documents or files to e-mail messages sent through kompass.com in order to avoid certain abuses (spam, viruses, etc.). The messages sent through kompass.com are for an initial contact and if you would like to provide extra informationÂ…just include a link to your website.

  3. Has my e-mail message arrived at the recipient company ?
    The e-mail messages sent via kompass.com are re-sent 3 times if they do not go through on the first attempt. If an error message is received (message undelivered, reached max of inbox size, etc...) it is forwarded to our local editor, and/or if possible directly to the site user concerned. Please note that it can take some time before some companies respond to the numerous e-mails they receive and some do not respond at all. You may also try contacting the companies by telephone/fax since some companies prefer not to do business by e-mail.
  4. I have received spam through kompass.com, what can I do?
    You may file a complaint with our spam service by sending an e-mail to spam@kompass.com. Please include the spam message received. We will contact the user and request that they stop sending such messages.
    We have instated several anti-spam measures, including the following:
    - no attachments allowed
    - no multiple e-mails allowed
    - e-mail addresses not displayed
    - maximum number of e-mails set for one session
    - limited free text
  5. I would like to contact a company by e-mail, how do I find their address ?
    E-mail addresses are not indicated on kompass.com ; however users have access to an e-mail message form which they can fill out and send to the company.

  6. How do I contact the companies by e-mail ?
    Click on the envelope icon next to the company's name in the company result list. Fill in the contact form correctly and completely and click on "Send".

  7. I sent an e-mail message through kompass.com and it came back undelivered, what can I do?
    Please send the failed delivery message (+ the company name if possible) to us at webmaster@kompass.com. We will contact the corresponding Kompass publisher for data correction.

    The Kompass data is available on various media, including books, CD-ROMs (both national and multi-country) and online systems. Please refer to "About Kompass" / "Kompass Products" for details.
  2. What kind of companies and data are available in the Kompass media?
    Every company worldwide which participates in business to business commerce may be listed in the Kompass Database.
    A basic listing is free so that the majority of appropriate companies are included.
    The Kompass Database contains 1.8 million companies.
    Kompass does not represent retailers since it is aimed at professional buyers who deal directly with manufacturers, agents or distributors under standard business to business conditions.
    The information is presented in comprehensive company profiles which include contact details, product and service information, names of executives, etc...For more details, see , see How to Use.
  3. Is financial information available on companies listed in kompass.com? Key figures (turnover, bank, etc.) are available on almost all companies and can be viewed by all users. Detailed financial information (balance sheets) is available for certain countries (Denmark, France, Norway, Spain, Sweden and UK) and can be viewed by paying users only.
  4. How is the data collected and updated? Most company profiles in the Kompass Database require modifications every year because of changes relating to executives, employment numbers, products and services, contact details (address, telephone, fax, e-mail), etc. To keep track of these changes Kompass visits key executives and circulates proofs regularly to the companies in its database. This is followed up by telephone verification to ensure that the data is accurate.
    Data content per company may vary and is dependent on information provided to Kompass by each company. Kompass always aims to obtain the most complete data practicable on the company's products and services together with general information as displayed in the company profile where this has been provided. Whilst every endeavour has been made to standardize the company information questionnaire, differences in information supplied may occur from one country to another. Kompass cannot be held responsible for any missing, inaccurate or obsolete data.
  5. What does the Kompass Classification System mean?
    The Kompass Product and Service Indexing System is comprehensive and effective. Developed over the past 50 years, it has recently been revised and is now standardized worldwide. A central classification team regulates the numbering and naming of the products and services. New products and services are added to cover emerging technologies and industries. An editorial team screens all the new indexing terms and verifies the accuracy of the translations.

    English is the reference language, but the indexing terms are available in close to 40 languages; therefore users can search for products and services using technical terms in their own native languages.
    The Kompass Classification contains over 54.000 Kompass Classification Codes arranged in a hierarchical structure.
